Recent research showed that consumption of coffee reduces the risk from getting cancer by about 40%. Some reports indicate that if drinking three cups of coffee every day, the possibility of avoiding liver cancer may raise up to 50%. This was reported from a research team in Italy, and the result of the study was published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

3 cups of coffee to avoid cancer risksLiver cancer is the third leading causes of death from around the world. The most common form of liver cancer is Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), which develops in men about three times more than in women.

Recently, studies on coffee may protect from womb cancer and prostate cancer came up with positive results.

Dr. Carlo La Vecchia from Milan’s Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri and lead author of the study said that this research confirmed that claims in the past that coffee was good for people’s heath and particularly the liver.

Researchers collected data from 16 high quality studies from a total of 3,153 cases, sourced from articles published between 1996 and 2012.

The study cannot prove the cause and effect relationship between drinking coffee and HCC, although the researchers have seen consistent results from the research across studies, time periods and populations, due to reduction on coffee consumption from patients suffering liver or digestive disease, and this may be partially attributable to the relationship.

Dr. La Vecchia explaines:

“It remains unclear whether coffee drinking has an additional role in liver cancer prevention. But, in any case, such a role would be limited as compared to what is achievable through the current measures.”

Drinking coffee is known to reduce the risks of diabetes, and diabetes is considered as the most common risk factor of liver cancer.

The researchers also say that hepatitis B virus vaccination, controlled hepatitis C virus transmission and reduction of alcohol drinking help to avoid 90% of the primary liver cancers worldwide.
