Healthy diet style, physical activities and aspirin can help to reduce the risk of lung cancer.
Diet
Studies on relationships between vitamins and lung cancer have been carried out.
Chemicals contained in fresh fruit and vegetables prevent damage of cells, hence may help to prevent cancer. Researchers believe that the Antioxidant vitamins A, C and E work in some ways to help reducing the risk of lung cancer, but there is no clear evidence yet. But strong evidence has showed that flavonoids which are found in many fruits and vegetables help to reduce the risk of lung cancer.
But please have in mind that if you continue to smoke, changes on your diet won’t reduce the lung cancer risk.
Researchers also looked into whether risk of lung cancer can be reduced in smokers by extra consumption of vitamin E and beta carotene (beta carotene helps human body to make vitamin A). Results showed that instead of helping to reduce the risk of lung cancer, these vitamin supplements may be harmful in smokers or people exposed to asbestos. Beta cryptoxanthin is another similar substance to beta carotene, it may lower the risk of lung cancer, but we don’t know whether smokers will be affected. Beta cryptoxanthin can be found in fruits such as oranges and mangoes.
Physical activities
Research found that risk of lung cancer can be reduced by 20-40% with higher levels of physical activities. Activities at work, in the household and leisure activities are all effective, vigorous exercises such as workouts, cycling or jogging may help more in reducing lung cancer risk. Study also found that physical activities have greater impact for smokers.
Aspirin
Taking aspirin for at least 5 years may reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer, this study was carried out in 2010. But please remember to check with your doctor first before regularly taking aspirin, because it may damage to the lining of the stomach and may cause bleeding.
